TCEC announces partnership with BarberWind Turbines, LLC

Hooker, OK - February 10, 2016 – On Friday, February 5, three trucks rolled into the yard at TCEC and began unloading. The shipment is the first of several containing the assemblies of a BWT-800kW wind turbine to be erected at TCEC.

“We are excited to be working with BarberWind on this demonstration project,” said TCEC Chief Operating Officer Zac Perkins. “We are committed to providing affordable electricity to our members using an all of the above approach to our energy mix. Exploring renewable energy is a sound way to test ways to integrate wind with fossil fuels and other renewables.”

Installation is expected to take three months utilizing local labor. The wind turbine will be connected to the grid at TCEC. The power generated by the turbine will be purchased by Golden Spread Electric Cooperative.

The BWT-800kW is designed specifically for the mid-size wind market and will transform wind power in those applications. The innovative design of the turbine features five lightweight blades supported by a rim. Because energy is harvested from the rim rather than a hub, the turbine doesn’t require a nacelle or gearbox making it less expensive to purchase, install, operate and maintain.

“Hooker, Oklahoma is the ideal site for our project,” said Michael Shore, President and CEO of BarberWind Turbines. “The wind resources are optimal and the steps that TCEC and Golden Spread have taken to work with us have made the process go as smoothly as possible. We are looking forward to validating our power curve and proving our turbine’s technology and efficiency.”

Together TCEC, Golden Spread and BarberWind Turbines are working to help realize the U.S. Department of Energy’s goal to generate 20 percent of the nation’s electrical power using renewable power by 2030.
