TCEC recovers from summer storm
HOOKER, Okla. (July 9, 2014) – Power has been restored to all TCEC members affected by the June 30 storm, which knocked power out to more than 9,000 meters initially. TCEC recovered from the widespread damage in record time in which nearly 40 percent of the cooperative’s meters were without power.
Within one week of the storm hitting, 592 power poles were replaced with the assistance of mutual-aid crews from sister cooperatives from Oklahoma and Texas. Crews came from Alfalfa Electric Cooperative, Cimarron Electric Cooperative, Central Rural Electric Cooperative, Greenbelt Electric Cooperative, Kay Electric Cooperative, Northwestern Electric Cooperative, Northfork Electric Cooperative, and a contract crew from North Plains Electric Cooperative. Assistance from other cooperatives has not been called upon since the ice storms of 2006 and 2007.
“We are thankful for the restoration help we received from other cooperatives,” said Zac Perkins, assistant general manager for TCEC. “Most of all we are thankful for our members, as well as a quick and safe recovery from this storm.”
Mutual-aid agreements are a testament to the cooperative business model. Cooperatives Helping Cooperatives is the sixth cooperative principle of which TCEC abides by. Under this principle, cooperatives band together to provide support during times of need. TCEC crews have assisted other cooperatives in Oklahoma needing assistance as recently as the May 2013 tornado recovery for a sister cooperative near Moore, Okla.
TCEC has begun cleaning up damaged poles and wires from the field, which is the final phase of recovering from the storm.
